TO THE UNKNOWN GOD 050313

Today’s Bible Reading –

2 Kings 12 – 13 and Acts 17

Selected verses…

Old Testament –

“Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, ‘O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.’  And Elisha said unto him, ‘Take bow and arrows.’ And he took unto him bow and arrows. And he said to the king of Israel, ‘Put thine hand upon the bow.’ And he put his hand upon it: and Elisha put his hands upon the king’s hands.  And he said, ‘Open the window eastward.’ And he opened it. Then Elisha said, ‘Shoot.’ And he shot. And he said, ‘The arrow of the LORD’S deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.’ And he said, ‘Take the arrows.’ And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, ‘Smite upon the ground.’ And he smote thrice, and stayed. And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, ‘Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria thrice.'”  2 Kings 13:14-19

New Testament –

“Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, ‘Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed any thing, seeing He giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after Him, and find Him, though He be not far from every one of us: for in Him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’ Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He hath ordained; He hath given assurance unto all, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.'”  Acts 17:22-31 (KJV)
